Hyperbole is common in the beauty world. People and brands claim that products will “change your life”, “get rid of your acne overnight”, “be the best thing you will ever use”. So it’s hard to talk about Augustinus Bader Skincare without sounding like I’m exaggerating. While it won’t get rid of your acne overnight, it could well be the best thing you will ever use—it really is that good. And it has gained some heavyweight celebrity fans including Kate Bosworth, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and, of course, Victoria Beckham who called on Bader to collaborate with her on Victoria Beckham Beauty’s debut skincare product (but more on that later).
Who Is Augustinus Bader?
I met Augustinus Bader back in January 2018 just before his cream, which also comes in a rich texture, launched that February. Professor Bader is one of the world's leading stem cell and biomedical scientists, who has spent over 30 years looking at the regenerative capabilities of our stem cells and asking the key question, ‘why do some cells heal and others do not?’
Much of Bader’s work has been focused on developing treatments that counter the life-long effects of disfiguring burns and more recently he has been looking at the potential for stem cell regeneration in other parts of the body, including our organs. So, what does this have to do with skincare? Well, while Bader’s work has the potential to be both truly groundbreaking and life-changing, this sort of medical science isn’t funded the way medicines like paracetamol and cough syrups are, which make the big bucks. So, Bader funnelled his knowledge of stem cell regeneration into a skincare cream to fund his medical research.
How Does Augustinus Bader The Cream Work?
The formula contains Trigger Factor Complex (known as TFC8, for short), this proprietary technology is at the core of every product and is the result of 30 years of clinical research. Rather than leaning on just one hero ingredient, TFC8 comprises more than 40 different ingredients including medical-grade vitamins, lipids, proteins and amino acids which, in very precise quantities and combination, helps the skin to repair itself. “TFC8 is essentially a toolbox, providing the skin with everything it needs to fix the things that go wrong, whether that’s age-related or from things like pollution. When you’re able to do that, you can support epigenetic factors that enable the body to rejuvenate your skin according to your own needs,” says Bader.
What are the Benefits of Using Augustinus Bader?
The main benefit of this cream is that it really does suit everyone. Designed with the idea of a toolbox in mind, it essentially contains everything your skin needs to tackle what requires repairing, which means the cream becomes uniquely personalised to you. “We call this next-generation smart skincare,’ notes Bader. “The products are genuinely universal as they work independently from gender, ethnicity, or age differences.”
The one formula tackles everything from fine lines and wrinkles, dehydration and redness to loss of elasticity, acne and pore size. Within just a few weeks of using this cream, I didn’t need to apply as much makeup, my skin looked smoother, calmer and more even in tone. I started getting friends and colleagues complimenting me on my complexion and how glowy I looked. One pal actually exclaimed, “bloody hell! Your skin is glowing” when we bumped into each other. It’s so good I can’t imagine it not being part of my skincare routine any time soon.
“We call this next-generation smart skincare” — Augustinus Bader.
And the results last. Since the cream is helping your skin repair itself on a cellular level, your complexion won’t just slip straight back to how it was before if you stop using it for a while, which is great because the products aren’t cheap.
“It’s all about empowering your cells to do that perfect regeneration that they are capable of doing,” explains Bader. “Looking after this amazing living organ, that does so much more than just cover the body, is more than just vanity.”
Which Augustinus Bader Product Should I Choose?
I have oily/combination skin and I’m a big fan of The Cream, a lightweight lotion that sinks in fast, hydrates and leaves my complexion looking dewy. The Rich Cream has added oils: argan, avocado and evening primrose oil, which are rich in fatty acids to nourish dry or older complexions.
Then there is the Victoria Beckham x Augustinus Bader collab. This moisturiser contains the TFC8 but also papaya enzymes to exfoliate and brighten, as well as microalgae to plump and firm. With a texture somewhere between a serum and a lotion, it boasts natural polymers, which create a breathable second skin, that is the perfect canvas for makeup. It’s also shot through with blurring powders that mop up excess oil and leave your complexion looking instantly smoother and more radiant, fast.
As I said, the products aren’t cheap—they start at £65 for a teeny discovery size (15ml)— but with pretty long-lasting results occurring within just a few weeks of use, it’s well worth a try.
